Willow Tree Farm is located in the middle of Caumsett State Park, on the north shore of Long Island. Mette Larsen, the owner/operator, is a life-long equestrian and the farm is a realization of her childhood dreams. As a matter of fact, as a young girl, Mette used to muck stalls at Caumsett. Her dream for the facility was to create a great place to teach and train and ride—for all disciplines.
The name comes from Mette’s Danish family name, Pilegaard, which translates to "Willow Tree Farm."
Mette has always had a love for horses, talking her parents into letting her buy her first pony at an auction for $25, tack included! The pony, Autumn, rode home in the back of their Volkswagen bus and lived in the house with them.
Mette got her first real horse, Tigre, at age 13. He was a 3 year-old Appaloosa and as green as she was! Together, with the help of Pony Club, Mette and "Tigger" did everything. He won numerous awards throughout his long, 32 year life, with his final award for Pony Club Senior Horse of the Year at the ripe old age of 30! Currently, Mette’s passion is Dressage, especially training and competing young horses.
Willow Tree Farm is primarily a boarding stables located in the middle of 1500 acres of state property. We offer a large indoor arena, outdoor regulation Dressage arena, large outdoor jumping ring, and multiple smaller arenas. Our footings include a sand mix, sand and rubber mix, bluestone, and grass. We have a cross-country course, and hours of trails. Mette believes that a great ride begins with great footing and has taken great pains to create and maintain multiple surfaces with which to ride and train on, without ever having to worry about injuries due to bad footing.
We cater to both serious equestrians and pleasure riders. With the diverse mix of riders and trainers, there are ample opportunities to experience different kinds of riding and horsemanship.
Throughout the year, there are numerous clinics held at Willow Tree Farm. The farm is a great place to clinic because of the great variety of rings, fields, and obstacles providing numerous options available to clinicians. Not only will you find world class clinicians teaching Dressage and Hunter/Jumper clinics, we also host natural horsemanship clinics regularly.
